High Hopes

Last year, the Toccoa Falls Eagles baseball team won their first National Christian College Athletic Association Baseball National Championship.

Ranked as number one in the NCCAA II, the Eagles, therefore, began this season with high expectations.

Initially, the Eagles were scheduled to play Friday, Feb. 12 against Milligan College.  Due to a wintry weather mix, however, their games were cancelled for the weekend.

Thus, the Eagles had their first game Wednesday, Feb. 17 against the Truett McConnel Bears who from Cleveland, Georgia, roughly 45 minutes away from Toccoa.

The Eagles placed Cris Jackson behind the plate catching, Jody Hyde at short, Ryan Kirby on third, David Hornback on second, and Josh Jordan on first.  There was also Brett Denney positioned in left field, Matt Sprewell in right field, and JW Wilkerson in center field.

A combination of pitchers took the field during the game as well, including Tim Frazier, Derek Brown, Michael Thorne, David Brown, Beau Mixon, and Justin Lanning.

Despite the talent and hard work, however, the Eagles were unable to take the first win of the season.  The final score was Bears 12, Eagles 6.

This is only the beginning for the Eagles though. Denney, left fielder, commented that, right now, “we are trying to figure out who our starting pitchers will be” and who will hit where in the batting line up.

With the whole season ahead of them, the returning 2009 NCCAA Baseball National Championship winners are looking forward to making it to the National Championship again.
